Arcosanti
Work-Stay Residency
Arcosanti, AZ, 2023

Residency and Series:

Artist Samantha Griffith and I went to “arcological” site and cooperative community, Arcosanti, for a work-stay experience in the desert outside of Phoenix, Arizona. While contributing to the labour of their sustainable community, we supported food-garden duties and donated design work to the Soleri Archives, collaborating on the design for the catalog of the founder, architect, Paolo Soleri.

During this experience I also made work inspried by the life and environment there.

Desert influence.

At Arcosanti life was simple and communal. Each morning we woke at the crack of dawn to beat the sun while we worked in the garden beds, dead-heading, harvesting veggies, and planting plugs. In the afternoon we were in the archives designing presentations for museums across the counry and a catalog of original drawings.

Everyone lived onsite and meals were eaten together. One of the paitnings I made was affectionately named “Loves”, after the lights of the gas stations seen from the roof at Arco. Potlucks were a regular occasion, karaoke, and trips down to the nearby creek for a dip.
